R.J. (Bob) MacLean’s business journey reflects a deep-rooted work ethic, entrepreneurial vision, and passion for innovation. Raised in Northern Alberta as the eldest of nine children, Bob learned early that perseverance and responsibility were key to success. After becoming the first business student from Grande Prairie Regional College to transfer to the University of Alberta, he earned his Bachelor of Commerce degree.

An entrepreneur from the outset, Bob launched his career with Peace Trailer Industries, providing modular workforce accommodations across North America, Russia, and South America. In 1997, he co-founded The Crossing Group, now Canada’s largest trenchless construction company—delivering critical underground infrastructure nationwide.

Beyond construction, Bob led major real estate developments in Edmonton, including College Plaza and the Varscona and Metterra Hotels. A licensed pilot since 1979, he helped establish Oliver Helicopter Company and co-founded AirSprint, Canada’s first fractional aircraft ownership firm.

To JA students, Bob offers this advice: “Don’t get discouraged. Don’t quit. Always be on the lookout for new opportunities.”
