Our History
The Start of J.A
JA started with a vision to help teach young people about business and free enterprise. That was back in 1919, before JA became a global leader in educating youth about financial literary, work readiness, and entrepreneurship. Now in over 121 countries, JA brings volunteers together with over 10.2 million of our future leaders. We believe in the boundless potential of young people and share their passion for excellence, respect their talents and creativity, celebrate their honesty and integrity, and create opportunities for hands-on learning.
Junior Achievement was founded by Theodore Vail, President of American Telephone & Telegraph; Horace Moses, President of Strathmore Paper Co.; and Senator Murray, Crane of Massachusetts. Starting with Company Program for high school students, JA moved into the classroom in 1975 with the introduction of Project Business for middle grades. Over the last 30 years, JA expanded its activities and broadened its scope to include in-school and after-school students.
Today, more than 250,000 students participate in JA Canada. We owe our success to our phenomenal JA volunteers. They are the backbone of our organization. Through the devotion of their time, volunteers help us to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in the global economy.
