Ryan Matenchuk works at Stanhope , and was a student in our Company Program in the 1990s. Here is his story:
In 1998, my parents enrolled me ini an after school business program, the Junior Achievement Company Program. My parents felt it useful for me to learn first-hand about “business” at a young age and felt I would have a head start with this program. While the educationi system deals well with the formal subjects such as English and Math, teaching business has always been a subject reserved for higher education and more often work and life experience.
In my first year of the Company Program, we made toques and managed to sell loads of them. It was my first real experience in the marketplace and experiencing the true nature of how a company functions. In my subsequent two years in the Company Program, we managed to do equally well and picked up an award or two at the annual Northern Alberta awards night The program helped broaden my perspective in business and also allowed me to discover a larger world outside the standard education experience. I seemed to excel in business and took the subject forward in University studies. I completed a BA in Economics at the University of Alberta and later a post graduate degree at Cass Busines School in London, England. I now work as a Senior Financial Analyst with property developer Stanhope.
My experiences in Junior Achievement as a student and subsequently as a volunteer have been helpful in finding my path in life. I was able to get a head start in the business world and had the opportunity to travel and meet other Junior Achievers from around the world, creatinng lifelong friendships and contacs. I would hightly recommend the program to young students looking to expand their horizons while looking for a challenge. Thank you.
